The Week in Review

With the heat behind us and the vacation season winding down, it’s back to work again for the rest of us. Despite the slow summer, we were graced by over 7,000 visitors and with 32,000 pages viewed since our launch in July. Here is our résumé of the week:

Berlin Art Week

Berlin Art Week which has become one of the highlights of the contemporary art calendar in the German capital is back for the sixth time, hosting art fairs including Berlin Art (formerly ABC Berlin) and Positions Berlin, with exhibition openings, prize award ceremonies, artist films, and numerous citywide events from September 13th through 17th.

Barcelona Gallery Weekend

Organized by Art Barcelona, the third edition of this annual 4-day event centered around contemporary and avant-garde art presents the projects of the some two dozen participating galleries in Barcelona and its outskirts. September 28 – October 1, 2017.

Toy Soldiers / Photo series by Sarah Blesener

Documentary Photographer Sarah Blesener in her series Toy Soldiers documents the military historical summer camps, cadet schools, and the patriotic ideology among the youth in Russia.

NY Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1

Printed Matter presents the twelfth annual NY Art Book Fair at MoMA PS1. Free and open to the public, the NY Art Book Fair is the world’s premier event for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines, with exhibiters including Nero, Dia Art Foundation, and Gagosian Gallery. September 22-24, 2017.

Biennale of Photographers of the Contemporary Arab World

Arab World Institute and European House of Photography present this second edition with some 50 photographers represented in eight participating locations around central Paris. September 13 through November 12, 2017.

Wolfgang Tillmans at Fondation Beyeler

For its first comprehensive engagement with the medium of photography at the Fondation Beyeler, 200 photographic works of Wolfgang Tillmans dating from 1989 to 2017 will be on show through October 1, together with a new audiovisual installation and an artist talk.

 

Gregory Crewdson

Gregory Crewdson: Cathedral of the Pines

The Photographers’ Gallery for the first time devotes all three of their gallery spaces to a single artist for the premiere UK exhibition of Cathedral of the Pines, a new body of work by Gregory Crewdson. Through October 8, 2017.

 

Andreas Gursky

Some other notable profiles this week include Andreas Gursky’s epic photography whose work invokes a style of representation as much as abstraction; Dorothea Tanning whose work spans the greater part of her century long life; Alice Lemarin, previous participant of 30 Under 30, with her poetic and sometimes fashion inspired portraits.
