Created in 1952 by photographers and writers as “common ground for the advancement of photography,” Aperture today is a multi-platform publisher and center for the photo community. See an interactive timeline which details the history of Aperture. From our base in New York, we produce, publish, and present a program of photography projects, locally and internationally including Aperture magazine, Photo books, a growing digital publishing program, a regular program of exhibitions, The PhotoBook Review, limited editions prints, annual Portfolio Prize, annual PhotoBook Award with Paris Photo.

    Nan Goldin is an American photographer known for her deeply personal and candid portraiture. Goldin’s images act as a visual autobiography documenting herself and those closest to her. Early in his career, Shya was invited by Wong Kar-wai to serve as an on-set stills photographer for films including Happy Together and In the Mood for Love. Granted rare access to the renowned director’s inner circle, over the years Shya captured poignant behind-the-scenes portraits of iconic actors such as Tony Leung, Leslie Cheung, Maggie Cheung, and Gong Li in unguarded moments between takes. The same word was chosen by Mara Palena to call a project that unfolds over the duration of existence.     The phrase ‘flash-looking’ suggests something slick and shiny, a high-gloss finish, a smooth way of operating. As a synchronising of parts, the phrase also suggests a quick glance, a glimpse, something seen out of the of corner of one’s eye: “What’s that”. Flash_Looking, featuring Toby Christian and Michela de Mattei, works through these connotations and more.
