Athens Photo Festival 2024 / Book Program
Deadline Apr 30, 2024
Athens Photo Festival / APhF
International

For its 2024 edition, the Athens Photo Festival (APhF) is delighted to announce its inaugural Book Program (APhF BP), curated by Sylvia Sachini. APhF BP is built around three pillars: the APhF Pick:24 Book Award, the APhF Dummy Award feat. Witty Books and Unfolded Chapters Exhibition. The Festival is accepting submissions for its Book Program from artists and publishers worldwide until 30 April 2024.

The APhF Dummy Award feat. Witty Books is an annual juried competition open to all unpublished photobooks worldwide. For this competition, one artist will be selected as the winner and receive a publishing contract with the publishing house Witty Books, supported by Future Format printing house, with a production budget of up to €15,000. In addition, 20 photobooks will be shortlisted and exhibited at the Benaki Museum / Pireos 138 during APhF in Athens in June-July 2024, and 10 books will be featured in the APhF print catalog. All 20 shortlisted photobooks will appear online and will be available in the open-access APhF Library.

The APhF Pick:24 Book Award is an annual juried competition open to all photobooks worldwide that were produced or published between January 2023 and March 2024. For this competition, οne artist will be presented with the APhF Pick:24 Book Award along with a €2,000 cash prize. In addition, 10 photobooks will be selected and exhibited at the Benaki Museum during APhF in Athens in June/July 2024, and will be featured in the APhF print catalog. All 20 shortlisted photobooks will appear online and will be available in the open-access APhF Library.

Unfolded Chapters represents our annual celebration of photobooks, embodying a curated group exhibition anchored in thematic exploration. This initiative stems from our desire to unearth older gems that deserve another chance in the spotlight and to breathe a new lease of life into past publications, but recently and newly released books are also welcome. There is NO restriction on the release date of the books. This year’s exhibition is titled Paper Graveyards, which takes its name from Eduardo Cadava’s recent book on art and photography.

Artpil periodically publishes submitted announcements of outside opportunities we do not administer. We recommend researching further prior to submitting, especially if entry fees are required.

The German dramatist Heiner Müller observed that German history lies as if smothered by a rheumatism blanket: beneath there is warmth and stagnation, just enough to give the impression all is well, while the peripheries are freezing. Georg Kussmann’s photographs in FRG were created under this metaphoric blanket. Made in the Federal Republic of Germany over a single summer, they depict everyday scenes of life, work, and leisure (more…)

On this day… Stasys arrives back at his home village, Lepšiai… It all happens in May 2024… That’s when the Stasys Museum opens up to the public, a museum titled after him. This was never predicted – the future from there, a little village, in the house within a disorderly wooden structure, run down with dripping roofs, filled with bellowing, roaring farm animals… No fairy tales could be heard there… But just one hour’s walk away from Lepšiai, the white rectangular building stands proudly in the city centre (more…)
