A major figure in American photography, Barbara Crane (1928–2019) never ceased to explore photographic forms and techniques. The first major monograph in Europe, the exhibition brings together over two hundred works by the Chicago-born artist, some of which recently entered the collection of the Musée national d’art moderne.
Produced in partnership with the Barbara B. Crane Trust, it focuses on the first twenty-five years of her career, and presents some of her major works, many of them previously unpublished. Barbara Crane’s work is remarkable for the synthesis it achieves between the tradition of American straight photography and a more experimental sensibility inherited from the European avant-gardes. This makes her photographic approach to the city, primarily Chicago, and its anonymous inhabitants particularly singular. Present in numerous public and private American collections, Barbara Crane’s work is still largely unknown in France.
