Dijkstra is celebrated both for her photographic and video works, many of which deal with questions of identity, the passage of time and intimacy. Cécile Lempert’s paintings evoke a cinematic world of ambiguities, shifting between the tender and loving to the violent and eerie. Lempert’s first solo presentation with Efremidis oscillates between images of tactile proximity and emotional distance. Selecting imagery from a personal archive of film stills, family snapshots and borrowed details of European masters, she depicts moments of intimate or invasive touch, while looming close-ups capture the murmuring of a mind behind the closed door of a face. Entitled A Shimmer Through The Quantum Foam, the exhibition features a series of unique animated pod sculptures that pulse and undulate, casting their flickering light across the surfaces of luminous algorithmically-generated paintings. Below this suspended constellation of bio-techno lifeforms, the soft glow of an aqueous ooze – indicative of life’s marine origins – sprawls in a shallow crater in a built up section across the gallery floor.
