Ancestral Clouds Ancestral Claims is Arjuna Neuman and Denise Ferreira da Silva’s first solo exhibition in Austria. It is centered around the presentation of a new work, coproduced by Kunsthalle Wien. The eponymous film is the latest part of a series called Elemental Cinema; each film in this series is dedicated to one of the four elements. In it, the artists have developed an approach that takes matter, material, and the elemental as its starting point – aspects which continue to be neglected and suppressed by the globally dominant order of thinking and being. In 1956, the French artists Gil J. Wolman and Guy Debord proposed a guide to détournement, re-purposing advertisements and magazines as a means of subverting society. This practice, which included cutting up city maps to encourage unplanned excursions through the city of Paris, was a way to effect disorientation. (more…)

MVTAFORMA, a collective exhibition promoted by Palazzo Atelié and curated by Elisabetta Moiraghi for DRIM Contemporary Art Ground opens on Friday 29 September at 6pm. In the setting of San Raffaele Cimena Alto, a charming village in the Turin area, the works by Lorenzo Fontana, Hetty Ann Laycock, Miriam Marafioti, and Beatrice Sacco will interact with the space and each other. Here is a radio tower standing tall, which looks like a monument soaring up with some revolutionary force. This is Paik’s Transmission Tower. Shown only at the Rockefeller Center, New York in 2002 and at the Sydney Opera House in 2004, it found its permanent home at Nam June Paik Art Center. (more…)
