After traveling the world and experiencing different cultures, Claire Guarry settled in San Francisco. In this city that has become her home, she documents the daily lives of her children, the main subjects of her photographs, basking in the warmth of the Californian sun. Through them, the French photographer from Dordogne succeeds in capturing the lightness and tranquility of childhood. The simplicity of a still carefree life, punctuated by walks, games, and contemplation.
Inspired by her life as an expat, the artist, born in 1981, confides that she wants to add a touch of nostalgia to her images. “Even though I’m happy to live here, we’ll always be expats in the United States. One day, no doubt, we’ll leave again. In the meantime, San Francisco is a city that inspires me.” As if one had to already anticipate the departure and the pain of leaving the warm light that fills her photos. Images whose vintage aesthetic sometimes evokes Polaroids, where, amidst often deserted landscapes, children seem in control of their freedom.
In this photographic quest, Claire Guarry sometimes lets textures take over. The images become sensory. Bare skin, fabric patterns, the combination of colors… this great fashion enthusiast depicts a poetic vision of the Pacific coast through this selection. This first major exhibition at Polka brings to Paris a luminous portrait of Californian life.
