The 2019 edition of FotoMexico responds to many of today’s global issues. The exhibition program explores the statement “the personal is political,” looking at at notions of borders and representations of the female body.

Key presentations include Susan Meiselas’ seminal series Carnival Strippers and Maya Goded’s Welcome to Lipstick – powerfully visualizing experiences of sex workers and those affected by drug trafficking and migration.

    The German dramatist Heiner Müller observed that German history lies as if smothered by a rheumatism blanket: beneath there is warmth and stagnation, just enough to give the impression all is well, while the peripheries are freezing.     Microscope is very pleased to present To Deceive the Eye, the second solo exhibition at the gallery of works by artist Ina Archer. For To Deceive the Eye – the English translation of the French term “trompe-l’oeil” – Archer draws attention to the representation of African Americans and “the other” in cinema, the media, and the wider culture, from the mid-1800s until present day, highlighting the ways in which visual advancements have often been used to perpetuate stereotypes and racist tropes.     Offering a rare and reflective insight into the seminal South African photographer Ernest Cole, A Lens in Exile is the first exhibition of his photographs documenting New York City during the height of the civil rights movement in America. Best known for his radical images documenting the violence of apartheid, Cole fled South Africa in 1966 and was officially made stateless in 1968.   • Maria Sturm: You Don’t Look Native to Me

    In 2011, Maria Sturm began to photograph the lives of young people from the Lumbee Tribe around Pembroke, Robeson County, North Carolina. Through the process of documenting their lives, Sturm began to question her own understanding of what it means to be Native American. Her new book You Don’t Look Native to Me combines photographs with interviews and texts to preconceptions and show Native identity not as fixed, but evolving and redefining itself with each generation.   • Eric Bachmann: The One-Man Water Cannon Test

    Following several violent clashes between youths and city police in Switzerland’s largest city during the summer of 1968, the city council, in consultation with the state council, decided to purchase four modern water cannon vehicles, two each for the city and cantonal police. However, by doing so, the city council overstepped its authority and bypassed the municipal council.
