As a child, daydreaming on my bed, I would sometimes close my right eye and imagine what my life would be like if I lost it. Suffering from Amblyopia in my left eye, also called lazy eye, the world around me appears as if through a blurred photographic lens. This obsession gave rise to some of the images most representative of this book. These photographs are of dreams, a series of reveries connecting with the unconscious. It is a collection of analog images made over 20 years, mostly from my youth, when I photographed without any technique, reference or method. Unconsciously. – Frédéric Schmiliver

  • Gregory Crewdson: Retrospective
    May 29 – Sep 8, 2024
    Albertina
    Wien, Austria

Gregory Crewdson (*1962, Brooklyn) is one of the world’s most renowned photographers. Since the mid-1980s, Crewdson has been using the backdrop of small American towns and film sets to create, like a director, technically brilliant and colourfully seductive photographs that focus on human isolation and the abysses of society. The enigmatic scenes self-reflexively raise questions about the boundary between fact and fiction but can also be related to socio-political developments. (more…)

    Belmacz
    London, UK

The phrase ‘flash-looking’ suggests something slick and shiny, a high-gloss finish, a smooth way of operating. As a synchronising of parts, the phrase also suggests a quick glance, a glimpse, something seen out of the of corner of one’s eye: “What’s that”. Flash_Looking, featuring Toby Christian and Michela de Mattei, works through these connotations and more. Brought in dialogue, Toby and Michela’s artworks speak with and across each other with an anachronistic elegance (more…)
