Jannis Kounellis / Black Rose, 1965-66
Jannis Kounellis
May 28 – Jul 27, 2019
Almine Rech
London, UK

With works from 1960–2014, the exhibition intends to act as an extensive overview of the career of Jannis Kounellis, tracing his interest in everyday materials, conjuring ideas of creation and destruction.

The exhibition is completed with two other works from 2014, which are concerned with the juxtaposition of precariousness and fragility with the robust iron surface which they are each comprised of. These works, which are among Kounellis’ final ones, conjure ideas of creation and destruction, and see the artist continue in his pursuit for art in everyday life.

Hailing from diverse generations and backgrounds, these individuals converge to explore how flames have served as agents of change across time and space. (more…)

The levee became a metaphor for the barriers built in an attempt to ward off inevitable decline, and the onslaught of time and nature. (more…)

Colombian anthropologist and artist Juan Pablo Plazas is fascinated by the ability of people and communities to interpret the world in different ways. In his practice, he starts from everyday objects and raw materials that have special material or formal properties. With wonder and a sense of humour, he takes them out of their ordinary context, turns them into sculptures or gives them a role in a performance. (more…)
