John Max, First and Last
John Max / First and Last
Jan 14 – Feb 25, 2023
Stephen Bulger Gallery
Toronto, Canada

Stephen Bulger Gallery is pleased to present John Max First and Last featuring two exhibitions of photographic work by Canadian artist John Max: John Max Shouts: Enough, No More, I Want and Strike up the Band!

John Max studied painting with Arthur Lismer and music at the McGill Conservatory of Music before discovering photography in the late 1950s through Lutz Dille, whose work, strongly influenced by Europeans such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertész, and Robert Doisneau, brought the subjectivity of the photographer to the fore. Max discovered in this approach something that corresponded with his own vision of the human condition. From that point on, he devoted himself to photography.

In a special exhibition, Altman Siegel is pleased to present a monumental and historic work by Chris Johanson. Exhibited for the first time since 2000, this painted triptych, Untitled, offers a rare insight into Johanson’s early large-scale works.

Known for his observant nature, Johanson was invited to participate in Glen Helfand’s 1999 exhibition, “Museum Pieces,” about the history of the de Young Museum. (more…)
