MuHKA, Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp presents Mash Up, the first major survey exhibition of works by British artist Anthea Hamilton. Since the early 2000s, Anthea Hamilton has developed a complex practice that spans sculpture, installation, and performance. The artist is best known for her compelling and immersive large- scale statement works that stage an altered interpretation of space, body, and materials. Hamilton dives avidly and without restraint into the meandering history of cultural production, aesthetics, and stylistic behaviours using her eye as a both subjective and productive lens.
By masterfully filtering, assessing and resituating elements culled from the depths of cultural production, her work creates new sensations, assemblages, and materialities that challenge our understanding of fashion, art, food, nature, design, architecture, and pop culture. Using what can be seen as familiar or comforting tropes and motifs, Hamilton is able to then propel viewers into surprising and unknown spheres.
