Maurizio Buscarino – Figure nel campo dello sguardo
Feb 27 – Jun 8, 2025
Sale d’Arte Alessandria
Alessandria, Italy

Maurizio Buscarino – Figure nel campo dello sguardo is the new exhibition project created at the Sale d’Arte, Alessandria, which retraces the career of Maurizio Buscarino, one of the most important theater photographers at an international level, through his powerful portraiture.

The exhibition presents over ninety works created from 1975 to the most recent years, selected and printed by the author himself, curated by Giovanna Calvenzi.

Born in Bergamo in 1944, Maurizio Buscarino approached the theater thanks to the meeting in 1973 with La casa del padre of the Norwegian company Odin Teatret, an encounter that marked the beginning of a fifty-year career that would lead him to travel in Italy, Europe and the world to tell and bear witness to theater in all its forms.

Tadeusz Kantor, Jerzy Grotowski, Eimuntas Nekrosius, Dario Fo and Vladimir Vasiliev are just some of the names of famous actors, directors and choreographers with whom Buscarino collaborated, whose travels would take him to Japan to create a reportage on the figure of Jusaburo Tsujimura, a leading exponent of Bunraku, the Japanese “puppet” theater.

Buscarino has also paid great attention to the contemporaneity that surrounds him, to cross the experiences of the theaters of marginality, the theaters of research and experimentation, such as that of Pontedera, but also to the theaters of prisons, such as those of Volterra, Lodi, Milan, Foggia, Bologna and Palermo.

Buscarino’s work is not only a testimony of theatrical events but an investigation into the human figure and condition, into the concept of fiction and reality, into dominant and marginalised cultures: thus his archive over time has become an impressive document on the culture of the last decades of the 20th century explored through his point of view on the place where something is seen to happen – the theater – which, together with his writings, is an important representation of his vision of the world.
