Misheck Masamvu: Show me how ruins make a home
Apr 2 – May 18, 2024
A Gentil Carioca
São Paulo, Brazil

A Gentil Carioca is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition by artist Misheck Masamvu (1980, Zimbabwe) in Brazil. Show me how ruins make a home presents Masamvu’s artistic practice to the Brazilian public through a series of new paintings, developed during a period of residence in Rio de Janeiro. Exploring the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, the artist uses his work to reflect on the past and search for ways of being in the world. Recognized as one of Zimbabwe’s leading artists, his work transcends borders, offering a renewed vision of African visual expression and, more broadly, of the decolonial project.

Masamvu lives and works between Harare and Mutare. He is in the collections of the Fondation Louis Vuitton and the Institut Français, Paris; Perez Art Museum, Miami; Inhotim, Brumadinho; among others. Among the main international exhibitions he has participated in are “Talk to me while I’m eating”, Goodman Gallery, London (2021); 22nd Sydney Biennale (2020); 32nd São Paulo Biennale (2016); Misheck Masamvu, Institut Français, Paris (2015); 54th Venice Biennale (2011).

Flash_Looking, featuring Toby Christian and Michela de Mattei, works through these connotations and more. Brought in dialogue, Toby and Michela’s artworks speak with and across each other with an anachronistic elegance (more…)
