Body, Language is an installation by Riley Hooker of interconnected inflatable structures for sitting titled SIT(UATION). The forms – produced in collaboration with architect Nick Meehan – evolved from Hooker’s publishing practice, and are calibrated for reading. They draw from the rich legacy of pneumatic design, building from the utopian imaginary and leftist movements of the 1960s. SIT(UATION) borrows much of its form and function from Physarum Polycephalum, or “Slime Mold,” and its curious form of decentralized, collective intelligence. To design the forms, Hooker turned to post-modern seating, fidget toys, sex manuals, and emergency shelters. The structure pushes back against the conservatism of the typical “museum bench,” fostering an atmosphere of collective learning, experimentation, and play.

During the 2016 US Presidential elections Japanese photographer, Fumi Nagasaka, became intrigued by the rural and southern USA. She had lived in New York City for a decade but despite travelling the world, had yet to visit the rest of the US. All this changed when her friend, Tanya Rouse, invited her to her hometown of Dora, Alabama. Nagasaka continued to visit Dora over several years, gradually building a photographic archive of her visits. (more…)

The space in which we live is determined by currents, by transitions. However, we are so used to moving around in this hypermodern world that we don’t even notice the currents that make up our lives. They are invisible, hidden in plain sight – until they collapse. The war in Ukraine is preventing the export of wheat, Covid-19 and timber shortages are making themselves felt in construction projects all over the world: These events are not just human tragedies, they are also an urgent reminder of global dependencies. Adrianna Ault was raised in New Orleans where a 350 mile levee system controls and holds back flood waters. This project began as Ault attempted to better understand the landscape surrounding the city, but evolved over the course of 5-years to encompass her changing family, journeys they took and the processing of grief. The levee became a metaphor for the barriers built in an attempt to ward off inevitable decline, and the onslaught of time and nature. (more…)

“A body of work starts by daydreaming…” –Mary Heilmann

On May 2nd, we will open ‘Daydream Nation’ at its 22nd Street gallery, exploring Mary Heilmann’s ongoing interest in drawing as a form of transcribing memory. Curated by artist Gary Simmons, Heilmann’s friend and former student and colleague at New York’s School of Visual Arts, the exhibition celebrates her talent for distilling complex images and ideas into deceptively simple geometric forms and abstract gestural marks. By definition, a critical infrastructure is one that is crucial for the operation of society and the economy. If it is threatened, a crisis situation may arise. However, such situations undoubtedly accompany its planning and construction, which involve political negotiation, economic transfers and the distribution of human resources. The construction of infrastructure such as oil and gas pipelines or fibre-optic cable reflects the geopolitical situation of the time (more…)
