The 90s Onstage

In collaboration with the cultural institution Salt, Istanbul, the Kunstverein in Hamburg presents the exhibition The 90s Onstage, with extensive German, English and Turkish language program. The exhibition The 90s Onstage consists of interwoven formats and approaches that put a variety of media – visual art, performance, television, theater, painting, music videos, talk shows and installation, elements of stage design – from the 1990s in Turkey into dialogue. The decade is characterized by political upheaval, rigorous austerity policies, private television, and newly emerging forms of the interdisciplinary. As a consequence, artists begin to explore a variety of themes, taking new approaches to public space, freedom, protest, and challenge cultures of remembrance. In this changing public sphere new stages emerge, generating reality anew.

  • Eoghan Ryan: Against the Day

    Irish artist Eoghan Ryan’s solo exhibition Against the Day at the Edith-Russ-Haus for Media Art spans moving image, installation, performance, puppetry, and collage. His new commission, the video installation Circle A (2023), premieres in the company of three installations from recent years. These works explore the intricacies of how power is communicated through media culture and language. In adapting personas, characters, and unrehearsed conversations, they expand into fable-like takes on the collective and the personal as “institutions”. (more…)

  • Adrián Balseca: Routing Rubber

    ROUTING RUBBER (January 19th – March 30th, 2024), showcases Ecuadorian artist Adrián Balseca’s (Quito, b. 1989) research on the plantation rubber industry in the Amazon. Produced on black and white, 16mm film, The Skin of Labour (2016) and its accompanying archive, provide a historical revision of the Amazon’s rubber boom, which saw its highest production from the years 1879 to 1912. Through the project, Balseca challenges the idea of the Amazon as a natural horizon, centering this territory as the origin of industrial modernity. (more…)

    During the 2016 US Presidential elections Japanese photographer, Fumi Nagasaka, became intrigued by the rural and southern USA. She had lived in New York City for a decade but despite travelling the world, had yet to visit the rest of the US. All this changed when her friend, Tanya Rouse, invited her to her hometown of Dora, Alabama. Nagasaka continued to visit Dora over several years, gradually building a photographic archive of her visits. (more…)

  • Dorothy Sing Zhang: Like Someone Alive

    Dorothy Sing Zhang unveils a compelling portrayal of humanity’s vulnerable state during sleep. The scene is set in the bedrooms of others. One is asked to be asleep, a squeeze cable release is placed under the pillow. The chance of one’s unconscious body rolling over and triggering the camera results in an exposure. Like Someone Alive expands these boundaries by withdrawing the traditional relationships between the photographer, the object and the camera. (more…)
