Lucy Franzen

Lucy Franzen is a portrait and documentary photographer based in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is not a photographer by training, rather, she has Undergraduate and Master’s degrees in biomedical engineering from the University of Rochester and the University of Glasgow, respectively. Upon discovering photography as a means of creative expression while studying for her degree in Rochester, the birthplace of Kodak, her eyes were opened to the transformative quality of light and to the beauty of the everyday. Lucy’s practice currently centers around environmental portraiture, in an effort to capture other’s experiences of home as she settles into the city that she has decided to make her own. She combines her love of art with her technical background in engineering, along with both digital and film photography, to explore light as a subject, rather than a medium, along with themes of warmth, connection, simplicity, and home.
