Kanya Iwana
Photographer

Kanya Iwana is an Indonesian director, writer, and photographer. From early life, she was immersed in the creative arts, including dance, theater, visual arts, and creative writing. Her passion has always been in storytelling, with a bubbling curiosity to explore a variety of mediums.

In 2012, she enrolled in American Musical and Dramatic Academy, eventually earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Upon graduating, she started to develop her passions behind the camera, and rekindled her love for writing and directing. In 2016, she received a full scholarship from the Indonesian Cultural Administration to attend a one-year intensive program in Directing and Producing from New York Film Academy. Upon program completion in 2017, she pursued a career in commercial directing and photography. Around the same time, Kanya welcomed her first child, Milo, whom she credits to be the biggest inspiration of all her work.

She’s committed to a visual arts profession since 2017 to the present day. Through her extensive training and multi-hyphenated career experience, she has created and produced works strong in tone and spirit, giving an immediate recognition of identity. Whether through portraiture, advertising work, or photojournalism, Kanya’s work elicits a romantic warmth in aura through her use of color and composition. She has gained the interests of household brands such as Dior, Nike, and Cirôc, as well as world-renowned publications, shooting covers for Time Magazine and Rolling Stone. Familiar faces in her portfolio include Anya Taylor-Joy, Issa Rae, Daniel Craig, SZA, and Steven Spielberg.

Kanya currently resides in Los Angeles and works both there and in New York City. In the near future, she hopes to curate her first solo exhibition – a collection of work surrounding motherhood, explored through archival photography, installations, and moving media.

Salvation is a previously-unpublished artist book by Jimmy DeSana that he conceptualized shortly before his death in 1990. The publication contains 44 of the artist’s late photographic abstractions that quietly and poetically meditate on loss, death, and nothingness. Depicted within the works are images of relics, body parts, flowers, and fruits that DeSana altered using collage and darkroom manipulations to create pictures that are both intimate and other-worldly. • Atiéna R. Kilfa: Special Effect
    May 4 – Sep 8, 2024
    Den Frie
    Copenhagen, Denmark
With Special Effect, Atiéna R. Kilfa presents a new body of works consisting of a short film and two large scale pencil drawings. In continuation of Kilfa’s investigation and restructuring of cinematic archetypes, Special Effect homes in on the nondescript figure of a man sitting at a desk. Shot in black and white, the film eerily evokes a timelessness of the figure by bringing it in resonance with pictorial genres reminiscent of various eras from German Expressionist cinema to the golden age of Hollywood film noir, fast forward to its 4K quality of today. • Rencontres d’Arles 2024
    Beneath The Surface
    Jul 1 – Sep 29, 2024
    Arles, France
Tremors and turmoil, spirits, traces, parallel readings and rereadings all constitute new perspectives underlying the 2024 edition of the Rencontres d’Arles. Photographers, artists and curators reveal their visions and stories, not least that of our humanity, by turns thwarted, in endless redefinition, resilient, but also visionary. Whether on the margins or established at the center, the narratives lead to divergent, multiple paths, all emanating from the faults in a porous surface: they intertwine, superimpose and overlap.
