Kanya Iwana
Photographer

Kanya Iwana is an Indonesian director, writer, and photographer. From early life, she was immersed in the creative arts, including dance, theater, visual arts, and creative writing. Her passion has always been in storytelling, with a bubbling curiosity to explore a variety of mediums.

In 2012, she enrolled in American Musical and Dramatic Academy, eventually earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Upon graduating, she started to develop her passions behind the camera, and rekindled her love for writing and directing. In 2016, she received a full scholarship from the Indonesian Cultural Administration to attend a one-year intensive program in Directing and Producing from New York Film Academy. Upon program completion in 2017, she pursued a career in commercial directing and photography. Around the same time, Kanya welcomed her first child, Milo, whom she credits to be the biggest inspiration of all her work.

She’s committed to a visual arts profession since 2017 to the present day. Through her extensive training and multi-hyphenated career experience, she has created and produced works strong in tone and spirit, giving an immediate recognition of identity. Whether through portraiture, advertising work, or photojournalism, Kanya’s work elicits a romantic warmth in aura through her use of color and composition. She has gained the interests of household brands such as Dior, Nike, and Cirôc, as well as world-renowned publications, shooting covers for Time Magazine and Rolling Stone. Familiar faces in her portfolio include Anya Taylor-Joy, Issa Rae, Daniel Craig, SZA, and Steven Spielberg.

Kanya currently resides in Los Angeles and works both there and in New York City. In the near future, she hopes to curate her first solo exhibition – a collection of work surrounding motherhood, explored through archival photography, installations, and moving media.

Marguerite Humeau’s Orisons is a subtle, 160-acre earthwork that transforms an unfarmable plot of land in Colorado’s San Luis Valley into a place of reverence, honoring its expansive history, existing ecosystem, and imaginable futures. The work consists of the land in its entirety, as well as a series of eighty-four kinetic and interactive sculptures that invoke the land’s histories and vast network of interrelations. (more…)
