Maria João Salgado, born in 1992 in Portugal. Alma Mater: Portuguese Institute Of Photography (IPF). Since then my work focused on documentary photography, developing projects on human rights and alternative living communities.
From 2016 to 2018 I was part of the Projéctil artistic-cultural collective, collaborating in the production of several events and in the creation of imagery for national (sculpture and music) artists. In 2019 I won the Young Creators Award in photography with the project Only Emergency Calls and was thus nominated to represent Portugal at the Biennual of Arts of the CPLP, in Luanda, Angola.
In late 2019, traveled to Western Sahara refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria, where I document the impact of women on the Saharaui community. This project was published in the national Portuguese newspaper Jornal Publico in October 2020 and was a finalist in Encontros da Imagem 2020 festival. I currently attend the documental and artistic photography master of the Institute of Cultural and Artistic Production of Porto and I’m developing work in a more artistic language.
