Not Marble, nor the Gilded Monuments
May 20, 2026

Welcome to the Artpil’s 174th edition of Prescriptions. We are in the month of May and festival season is upon us. From Venice Biennale’s 61st International Art Exhibition, Biennale of Sydney’s 25th Edition and Urban Art Biennale 2026 to BAM’s own Winter/Spring 2026 program; From the recently wrapped up Circulation(s) and Photo London and the last days of Festival de Cannes’s 79th Edition, to the imminent Getxophoto: RESET and Auckland Festival of Photography.

Today is May 20th. On this day in 1609, William Shakespeare published his Sonnets.

Not marble, nor the gilded monuments
Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme;
But you shall shine more bright in these contents
Than unswept stone besmear’d with sluttish time.
When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
And broils root out the work of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword nor war’s quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory.
‘Gainst death and all-oblivious enmity
Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all posterity
That wear this world out to the ending doom.
So, till the judgment that yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in lover’s eyes.

– William Shakespeare
