Organized by Fiera Milano and directed by Nicola Ricciardi, miart – Milan’s international modern and contemporary art fair – is the exhibition that presents the largest chronological offer of artworks in Italy, proposing masterpieces from the early twentieth century – from Balla to de Chirico, from Schiele to Picabia – together with new productions by the most influential contemporary artists, from David Hockney to Fracis Alys, from Rosa Barba to Monica Bonvicini.

Drawing inspiration from the life and work of Robert Rauschenberg, on the centenary of his birth, the twenty-ninth edition of miart will be inspired by the fundamental principles of his work—and in particular his commitment to dialogue and collaboration.
As Rauschenberg himself wrote, he was attracted to “any situation where the final work was the result of more than one person’s doing”, and with the same spirit miart 2025 will also serve as a platform for fostering new synergies and connections, as also suggested by the edition’s title, “among friends”, borrowed from the latest retrospective dedicated to the American artist.

The main section of miart hosts galleries who present contemporary art in its strictest interpretation as well as galleries presenting works produced before the year 2000, in a selection ranging from the masters of modern art to the most recent new creations. In this section, there are galleries in the field of collectible design too, with special emphasis on the relationship between the visual and applied arts and on the design-oriented nature of exhibits.

Portal
This year’s Portal section brings together projects that break the borders between disciplines, time and space, in order to explore hidden narratives and perspectives, as well as new creative fields. The grouping is inspired by Robert Raushenberg’s visionary approach to art-making as a collective process, and his description of his collaborative pieces “like a whole group of brains and feelings and solutions”. Refusing rigid and outdated categorisations, these projects question our understanding of geographies and temporalities, offering a richer and more complex view of past and present to reconfigure our future.
