The fair for contemporary art will be taking place in Vienna from March 14 to 17, 2024, bringing together national and international artists, under the motto “The City in Dialogue.” Over 80 galleries from around 20 countries and four continents – Europe, Africa, North and South America – make this year’s SPARK Art Fair in Vienna’s MARX HALLE the leading international art fair in Austria. In keeping with the unique SPARK concept, only solo presentations will be exhibited. This format puts the artists’ work centre stage and provides the perfect opportunity for exciting discoveries.

“With the participation of a large number of renowned galleries from so many countries, we are more than living up to our motto of ‘The City in Dialogue’. We are putting Vienna in the spotlight of contemporary art and transforming it into an international platform for dialogue. Once again, we will have both carefully selected established artists and also young, up-and-coming artists at the MARX HALLE. We are particularly pleased with the high female representation, which is around 70 per cent,” explain Walter Seidl and Jan Gustav Fiedler, who together chair the Curatorial & Advisory Board, which also includes Athens-based curator Marina Fokidis and Zurich-based curator Christoph Doswald.

In addition to international gallery greats such as Konrad Fischer (DEU) and Raquel Arnaud (BRA), the fair will focus on new works from up-and-coming exhibitors such as Reservoir Projects (ZAF) and Annka Kultys (GBR). Austria’s contribution to the 60th Venice Art Biennale – conceptual artist Anna Jermolaewa – will also be showcased as a solo presentation at SPARK. International representation has increased both among the galleries and the participating artists.

Works by Esther Ferrer and Julius von Bismarck can already be mentioned as special highlights of SPARK Art Fair 2024. In total, 34 galleries from Austria will be represented, among them Galerie Krinzinger, Galerie nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder and Christine König Galerie. From New York, the ‘Kates-Ferri Projects’ gallery will be exhibiting Turiya Magadlela, Pilevneli from Istanbul is going to be featuring Refik Anadol and the Neapolitan gallery Fonti is going to present artworks from Giulia Piscitelli, PSM from Berlin will exhibit Almut Linde and acb Gallery from Budapest exhibits Mátyás Erményi.

“We are delighted that we have been able to boost the number of international galleries and artists once again this year. We aim to develop this trend further in future editions of SPARK,” say Seidl and Fiedler.

Cooperations with the most significant Viennese museums and art institutions have been established to maximise the visitor experience in contemporary Vienna. The extensive international audience will also be provided with interesting insights and networking opportunities via the digital SPARK Studio platform and virtual tour. Interested parties can view the first gallery highlights, artworks and installations online even before the fair begins. This content will still be available in a digital format even after the fair has ended.

The curatorial concept of SPARK 2024 is based on the motto “The City in Dialogue”. As the most liveable city in the world, Vienna has been a focal point for national and international artists and people involved in the arts scene for many decades. “SPARK 2024 focuses on this wealth of artistic representation and Vienna as an artistic hub for other cities around the world,” explains curator Marina Fokidis. Numerous artists are taking the opportunity to make an artistic statement with works produced especially for SPARK.

For the first time, SPARK 2024 will be complemented by a special programme on the GLOBE theatre stage in Vienna’s MARX HALLE. A curated film programme with works by selected gallery artists such as Scott Clifford Evans from Charim Gallery and Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński of Wonnerth Dejaco will be shown on a cinema screen. The theatre will also act as the venue for an accompanying performance and discourse programme. On each of the four days, an impressive series of talks on a specific range of topics like Artificial Intelligence and The Beauty of Diversity is planned, to allow visitors to delve deeper into the world of contemporary art.

SPARK Art Fair is particularly committed to promoting artists and galleries by awarding prizes for outstanding works, exhibitions, and booths, in cooperation with partner organisations.

The new NW is inaugurated with the opening exhibition Ritual in Transfigured Time, named after the 1946 short film of the same name by Maya Deren (Kiev, 1917–New York, 1961). Deren, whose life was driven by a desire for freedom, was a guiding light for us in devising the exhibition and film programme, as well as the principles of our revitalised organisation: dialogue, collaboration, experiment and the breaking down of boundaries.
