Imagine a bright room with three white walls; the fourth is a view of the Mediterranean Sea. You enjoy this delightful image, with the light blue sky and the ultramarine of the water. It’s beautiful. You focus your gaze on the horizon; the line is so firm that after a while it is engraved on the cornea, even when closing your eyes tightly it is there: a perfect horizontal line.

Now erase it until there is not even the pressure of pencil on paper visible, nothing left to remind you of where the sky begins and the sea ends.

This space you just opened in your mind is the place where we all go when we get depressed. We’re sent to a parallel world, close by and yet unknown, where there are no delineations between vertical and horizontal, no distinctions between right and wrong, or logic and madness. We enter this other world by collapsing our system, and in my experience it is an experience more absorbing than any drug.
