Yahel Gazit is an Israeli documentary photographer and researcher, currently based in Jerusalem. She is a member of the photography collectives Activestills and Women Photograph. Yahel began photographing during the violent events of May 2021 in Jerusalem, when tensions between Jewish and Palestinian communities erupted. She sought to document the unfolding events and the experiences of those affected, a focus that has shaped her work ever since. Through photography, she aims to engage with the social and political landscapes of the region, exploring the layered connections between people, place, and power.
Yahel has worked with local human rights as well as other grassroots initiatives for peacebuilding and Palestinian human rights. Her collaborations extend to various local and international journals, capturing the stories of communities she encounters – including Jewish and Palestinian residents, LGBTQ individuals, dancers, and others in contested spaces. Her work navigates the intersection of personal and collective narratives, reflecting on resilience, identity, and the impact of state and social violence.
Yahel’s photography has been featured in publications such as Time Magazine, The Guardian, Financial Times, Newsweek, and Ha’aretz. She holds a B.Sc in Biology and a B.A in a Humanities Honors Program from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is currently pursuing an M.A in Cultural Studies. Her academic work informs her photography, focusing on visual culture, activism, and the dynamics of demonstration spaces. In her practice, she incorporates elements of local languages, history, and architecture, seeking to tell nuanced stories that connect the personal to the collective.
