Diario de ausencias is a ten-year project by Mexican photographer and curator Karla Guerrero, who photographs spaces and objects while intervening in archival images that seem to speak from a latent absence. These images prompted questions about the construction of memory and the possibility of accompanying and bearing witness to the slow process of forgetting.
Bringing together archival imaginary, instant film, and compositions incorporating black and white photographs, the publication traces moments of absence that persist and traverse time, like the remnants of something lost or on the verge of disappearing.
Edited by Anne Murayama, publisher and founder of Ephemere, the publication reimagines the photobook as a space for pause and contemplation, inviting the viewer to engage with the visual world Guerrero has assembled over the course of a decade.
Guerrero’s practice centers on an investigation into the materiality of memory as a process of traces and transformations. Through hybrid compositions combining collage, instant film, and archival material she establishes a dialogue between diverse elements and visual languages. Encouraging an attentive, sensory, and contemplative engagement with the image, Diario de ausencias brings these explorations into focus, offering a reflection on the artist’s ongoing inquiry into the ways images hold, transform, and give form to experience.
