Founded in 1996, ShanghART Gallery is one of the first contemporary art galleries established in China. With spaces in Shanghai, Beijing and Singapore, ShanghART has been a driving force of the development of Chinese contemporary art for the past twenty years. Working closely together with over 40 artists, ShanghART regularly participates in the major international art fairs and collaborates with important art institutions in China and from all over the world.

    Max Beckmann (1884–1950) was a German painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, and writer. Although he is classified as an Expressionist artist, he rejected both the term and the movement. In the 1920s, he was associated with the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), an outgrowth of Expressionism that opposed its introverted emotionalism. (more…)

    Microscope is very pleased to present To Deceive the Eye, the second solo exhibition at the gallery of works by artist Ina Archer. For To Deceive the Eye – the English translation of the French term “trompe-l’oeil” – Archer draws attention to the representation of African Americans and “the other” in cinema, the media, and the wider culture, from the mid-1800s until present day, highlighting the ways in which visual advancements have often been used to perpetuate stereotypes and racist tropes.
