Dora García / Second Time Around
Apr 18 – Sep 3, 2018

Dora García

The exhibition Dora García: Second Time Around at Museo Reina Sofia centers on the artist Dora García (Valladolid, 1965), embarking on an open journey around a broad array of her works in diverse formats and mediums – film, performance, texts, drawings – and punctuating some of the constants running through her career. The show outlines the complex network of intellectual reference points – from literature to more marginal or heterodox frames of reference – her artistic practice draws from as it circulates fiction, performance and what García refers to as the “illusion of the human psyche” produced by everything.

The title, Second Time Around, originates from Julio Cortázar’s homonymous story, written in 1974, which recounts the climate of psychosis and uncertainty caused by the trauma of disappearances in Argentina. Second Time is also the name of García’s most recent project, which orbits the figure of Oscar Masotta, a contemporary of Cortázar’s and a pivotal theorist in the Argentinian avant-garde from the 1950s to the 1970s. Masotta’s ideas on constructing happenings and audience have also given rise to four short films and a film by the artist.

Expressly for the exhibition, Dora García has created a site-specific project for the Museo’s Vaults Gallery: a sound and object installation realized with her frequent collaborator, musician Jan Mech, and based on Franz Kafka’s short story The Cares of a Family Man, published in 1919. Moreover, the new project alludes to mysterious beings who, like the character Odradek in Kafka’s story, live under stairs, in basements, and will still be there when we are gone.

Various Small Fires proudly presents The Turquoise Room, an exhibition of new drawings by Alina Perez. This is the artist’s first presentation with the gallery and first time to exhibit in Texas. In this body of work, Perez depicts a series of dreamlike tableaux that delicately unfolds as an inquisition into one’s relationship with the world around us. What happens when our physical surroundings begin to reflect our emotional states? We interact with places and things daily that can offer a sense of comfort or belonging, but they can also echo our fears and anxieties. (more…)

What is “popular”? Popular is not fame or celebrity. Popular is not the products of mass culture. Popular is not pop. Popular is not the art of the people, nor the identity of the country, nor the symbols of the nation. The popular is not the product of the proletariat or the craftsmanship of the working classes. The popular is not folklore. The popular is not clichés or tourist souvenirs. The popular is not visual candy, one-euro merchandise, advertising royalties. Popular is somewhere in-between all of that (more…)

A year. That’s how long it’s been since Karla Hiraldo Voleau’s exhibition Another Love Story first opened at the MEP in Paris in 2022. A year is also the timeframe of the story chronicled in that project – a love story personal to KHV, which shifts abruptly from its climax to its end when she discovers that X, her lover, is leading a double life – a revelation that prompts the artist to question her certainties.
