Cuba. The Other Side of the Mirror
Jose Maria Mellado

José María Mellado / Sala de espera para cruzar a Regla

I enhance the light in the image, in the most pure darkroom fashion to bring back the emotion and the atmosphere of that moment.José Maria Mellado

The exhibition, Cuba. Al otro lado del espejo / Cuba. The Other Side of the Mirror, focuses on five large-sized ChromaLuxe photographs from the years 2006 – 2016.

José María Mellado / Desbordamiento del Río

For Mellado, Cuba is one of the most up-to-date countries in the world. “For me, it was the fascination for beauty that lies in the temporary and imperfection. And the strange sense of affinity that I had from the first moment.” The title The Other Side of the Mirror lends its poetic level of meaning to images that tell of past and present times.

José María Mellado / Chabola, chucho y furgoneta

José María Mellado / Teatro Campoamor en ruinas

In his photographs, the artist develops a pictorial language in which the question of the nature of time is always obvious. Mellado encounters people in the structures in which they live, and instead of singling out big landmarks, he finds small symbols to capture the characteristic atmosphere.

Sensitizing and expanding our perception of what is allegedly a familiar reality is the attitude adopts in his work.
