Today is International Women’s Day. Occurring once a year like a rare solar eclipse of the male ego, each 8th of March we celebrate women, a tradition started over a hundred years ago and still a long way to go. Here is a look at some select profiles to honor women who have created, engaged, and inspired.

Internationally recognized master portrait photographer Rineke Dijkstra participates in I Am a Native Foreigner at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, on view through June 3, 2018.

 

Maria Luigia Gioffrè

Maria Luigia Gioffrè

Artist, performer, and photographer Maria Luigia Gioffrè whose research explores language as performative process at the core of a multidisciplinary practice on narration, time and absence, was recently awarded the Celeste Prize 2017.

Carolee Schneemann

The first comprehensive retrospective of Carolee Schneemann, 2017’s Golden Lion recipient for lifetime achievement, Kinetic Painting, spanning the artist’s prolific six-decade career is on view through this weekend, closing March 11, 2018 at MoMA PS1.

Alba Deangelis

Alba Deangelis whose work is inspired by Le Corbusier will be exhibiting her photography at Female in March 10th Edition at Lanificio 159 in Rome, curated by Officine Fotografiche. Opening Saturday March 10, 2018.

Ornella Mazzola

Ornella Mazzola presented a glimpse into Females, her ongoing series capturing the women in her family. “Photography was a way of approaching them, bridging the distance, in silence and on tiptoes.” Her work will also be presented in Female in March, opening Saturday March 10, 2018 at Lanificio 159.

 

Newsha Tavakolian / Fani Raghman Ani group

Newsha Tavakolian

Newsha Tavakolian, along with three others from Magnum Photos, to mark 30 years of the Sakharov Prize, worked with remarkable individuals, all staunch defenders of human rights, to shine a light on their work in They Defend Our Freedoms. A commission for European Parliament, these stories are gathered in a new book and exhibition serialized on Magnum’s site.

 

Ekaterina Anchevskaya / Forgiving

Ekaterina Anchevskaya

Ekaterina Anchevskaya, among 2018’s 30 Under 30 Women Photographers presented Forgiving, an ongoing documentary about people who left the world to start a new life in a monastery. This place is a salvation for many who came to seek help in times of hopelessness.

 

Vanessa Beecroft / Abstract Memories

Vanessa Beecroft

Vanessa Beecroft, the highly celebrated artist known for her monumental performance using Extra Bodies returns to the source to inaugurate Pio Pico Gallery in Los Angeles, with a selection of sensual sketches and ceramic nudes, Abstracted Memories.

 

Esther Shalev-Gerz / Sound Machine

Esther Shalev-Gerz

Esther Shalev-Gerz’s exhibition Factory Is Outside examines the position of the traditional professions in a digitizing world and the depiction of work in visual art. At Serlachius Museums, on view through April 1, 2018.

 

Sally Mann / A Thousand Crossings

Sally Mann

With many previously unpublished works, this exhibit A Thousand Crossings offers an overview of Sally Mann’s artistic achievement as well as a focused exploration on the continuing influence of the South on her work. Through May 28, 2018 at The National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Laure d’Utruy

Laure d’Utruy contributed two photo essays, Tempohome, documenting the temporary refugee housing at the former Berlin’s Tempelhof airport and The Royal Road: In Transformation exploring the dualities in many aspects of Iranian society.

2018 is said to be the year of Women. Time Magazine named the Persons of the Year the Silence Breakers who started the movement harnessing social media and helping to evolve codes of conduct across industries, compelling us to revaluate our behavior with respect to over half the population of our civilization.
